A Therapist To Trust In

Daniel Factor, LMFT, Psychotherapist

A time comes in everyone's life when we need to do some growth & healing work. Thankfully the ability to grow & heal is literally built into our human-nature, a nature that comes alive when receiving needed supports.

Therapy is for receiving that needed support, and in a way that fits with you, so that you can experience for yourself your own natural growth & healing abilities.

Throughout my life, along with my broad training and experience as a therapist, I've known and so I trust in our shared human ability to overcome what's happening 'right now', no matter what happened 'back then’, and no matter what concerns we have about our future.

Freeing yourself to grow and create in your own expressive way a better life is what I know you are able -- and meant -- to do.

Helping you discover this for yourself will be a heartfelt privilege for me.  To learn more of what I can offer, take a look below.

Nature is driven to regenerate and bloom itself, as are we.  A difference with human nature is we can do it by choice.

    INDIVIDUALS

    You Deserve Support  ---------

anxiety  |  phobias  | depression  |   fears  |   confusion  |   compulsive behaviors   |   relationship concerns |   grief & loss   |  feeling stuck in life  |   medical stress

Here's what I want you to know:  You were born ready and able to be happy, and have a satisfying life.  There are many reasons for why life turns in a different direction, reasons that can be layered.  And, there are many kinds of  'symptoms and behaviors' that emerge when things go sideways.

Not all of our troubling experiences are problematic, as life does include challenges that simply strain our current capacity, or naturally fill us with an unfamiliar depth of emotion, and so we reach for support and guidance to help us through.  For the rest, our 'symptoms and behaviors' are telling us a story, asking us to pay closer attention, a story calling us towards our actual truth and potential.  These things are not obvious at first, and can be hard to grasp when we are in the midst of struggling. Therapy is a process to clarify, release, heal, and build anew, which brings you to a better place.

I offer an empathic and safe relationship, with broad and diverse training and experience, to help you feel at ease.  As you gain a foothold in our work together, you will soon feel better, grow clearer, and experience more hope and confidence and trust in yourself.  I'm ready to begin when you are.

What's Love Got To Do With It?  ---------

Love relationships deepen and enrich our life, and yet this just might take some learning how to do.  If you're beginning a new, or are in a longer, love relationship, there can be a range of normal challenges and hiccups along the way.  Much of this is due to life being a cumulative experience, as we carry forward the best and the worst of past times, some by choice and some without our knowing that we do.

If you're experiencing tensions or conflicts or hurtful patterns, sudden stressful changes, or a rupture in trust and safety, challenges with intimacy or communication, or pressures from outside your relationship seeping in, let's get a handle on it before you reach a point of no return.

A special time is readying to have a baby, and when your baby arrives, bringing lots of questions and worries, joys and excitements, and meaningful life changes.  At these times, therapy can be a truly rewarding gift you give yourself, as a couple, and for your child and growing family.

Therapy is also valuable for exploring prior to forming a deeper commitment, or for navigating through changes that are leading to a separation, breakup, divorce.

Where ever you are, and whatever it is, I'm here to assist you during all of these important times of love.

    STRESS / TRAUMA

Reducing Stress & Healing Trauma -

Stress is just a part of life, and at low levels it functions to motivate us.  However, persistent stress is signaling that something needs to change in order to stave off long-term mental and physical health concerns.  I can help you with that.

When we feel in danger, a more powerful surge of stress energy charges through us, generating bodily impulses called 'flight-flight-freeze'. These are not choices we make, but reflexes.  When these protective reflexes for any reason do not succeed or complete their action  --  which would allow our system to reset itself from this protective state  --  our brain and muscles retain them as incomplete action memories.  This kind of memory is very different than normal memory, and it interferes with having a clear picture that what has happened has now past.

Part of the reason is, traumatic stress alters and scatters the different puzzle pieces that normally make up our total sensory & mental experience. These scattered puzzle pieces create incoherence, as our brain and mind try to make sense out of the fragments that are not joined. And this leaves us feeling confused, disconnected, feeling unsafe within our own skin.

Healing trauma gently brings the pieces back together, changing how you feel, releasing the symptoms, and restores your life. Please visit My Approaches below to learn how I can help.

    ADDICTION RECOVERY

    Sustain Recovery  ---------

Addictions, from mind altering substances to compulsive behaviors, sap life energy, take over our time, profoundly alter our decision-making, steal our vitality, and therefore cause damages that far exceed the short-term sought for relief they provide.

But still, before the addiction set in, whatever it is, it first served a function, and then became a habit.  The process of something 'serving a function' and then turning into a habit has deep biological, emotional, relational, and developmental roots.  Therefore, addiction recovery is a process with layers and stages, and long-term sustained recovery, beyond the reduction or elimination of the specific addiction itself, requires healing at the roots of the addiction. This is where I come in.

If you're uncertain if you have an addiction but have questions about what you're doing, I welcome the opportunity to explore this with you.

For those who have begun their recovery with a detox, or in-patient services, or are in a 12-Step or alternative program, or otherwise desire to get at the roots of an addiction, I'm here for you, and welcome the opportunity to help you stabilize, restore, and revitalize your life.

    SOMATIC THERAPY

    A Powerfully Integrative

    Approach  ---------

Somatic Psychotherapy, focuses on the connections of our brain/body/mind, rather than relying only on our verbal narratives for explanations and understanding. The 'language of our body' is telling a potent story, using gestures, impulses and urges, reflexes, sensations, posture and breath, a language woven into our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, memories, and dreams, including memory stored outside our conscious recall but articulated by our body patterns.  For this reason, somatic therapy brings the body into view, in order to get to the roots of healing.

Because somatic psychotherapy restores our innate resiliency, it is especially helpful in regulating strong emotions, or out of control thoughts or behaviors, or addictions, and in particular, healing trauma.  I have two advanced credentials in models beneficial for many many mental health challenges:

    • I also use somatic wisdom from: Hakomi, Focusing, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing.

I'm passionate about Somatic Therapy, because it guides 'us' to the core of 'your' challenges, by tapping into your natural resiliency and healing powers, giving you deeper relief, and revitalizing your life.

    STRESS / TRAUMA

    The Science Says  ---------

As stated above, traumatic stress creates a memory puzzle where the pieces are scattered.  Some of this is held in muscle memory, where the unfinished impulses continue to send their energy signals to the brain that something bad 'is' happening, even though what 'has' happened has past.  These energy signals unnerve us, frighten us, causing many kinds of symptoms, including bad dreams, flashbacks, confusing reactions, mood swings, dissociation, anxiety, depression, avoidance behaviors, and even addictions, and other life challenges.

    TRAUMA MEMORY

    HEALED MEMORY

And still, within us are also the keys to release the impacts of traumatic stress, and this is what I can support you to do with Somatic Therapy.

Somatic Therapy is effective for healing all forms of traumatic stress, from single event shocks, early in life suffering, neglect, or abuse; and medical stress, sudden losses, and the list goes on.  Whatever it is, healing can occur, and your life can be restored.

  •

    FOR COUPLES

    For Couples   ---------

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is an evidence based couples therapy that supports couples in building stronger, more trusting, more loving connections. EFT helps couples discover and nurture and communicate hidden relationship needs. This validated approach leads to positive changes by overcoming ineffective and hurtful patterns, so a couple can create the kind of love relationship that just works and enriches their lives.

My training also includes what is called a 'Family Systems' perspective, which means that what ever is occurring within a relationship is best understood as a dynamic between the couple, or all the family members, and influenced by their history, and is a dynamic system which resists change, and one in which everyone is playing a role in maintaining the system for better or worse.

Somatic psychotherapy, as well, easily integrates with couples therapy focused on emotional distress, or intimacy issues, or other common relationship ruptures in connecting, including the rise in stress that comes with life changes such as parenting, or loss, or other domestic & life style stress.
